Surgery may be for exploration, diagnosis or repair, palliative, or corrective. Emergent, urgent, elective.

Preparation for any surgery requires voluntary consent

Patient teaching and instructions help prevent complications and unexpected outcomes.

Pre-op Nursing requires a detailed history

Gather Baseline information Chart Allergies

Record all drug use ----prescription or NOT! (DON’T FORGET the HERBS)

For all the smokers, please ask them to stop (2 MONTHS BEFORE THE SURGERY)

Help relieve anxiety by listening to their fears

Answer questions Relay knowledge ---let them know you’re near.

Assessment matters: Heart, Lung, Fluid, and Nutrition status

Help identify potential problems post-surgery.

Focus for the team in surgery: Patient safety.

Proper position Maintain Airway & Dignity.

Post-op instructions: Turn, Deep Breathe, & Cough

To prevent blood clots Just go for a walk (AROUND THE NURSES STATION).

Splint The incision Take the pain meds GET OUT OF BED!

Use the incentive spirometer & Wear those TEDS

Expected outcomes: Fluids in and out NO Temp Clear lungs

Teach restrictions Medications & Discharge Home.
