I am currently attending a nursing program at the University of Southern Indiana.
Dr. Donna was our guest speaker on how to provide spiritual care to our future patients; a topic I am passionate about as I want to respect and honor everyone’s own faith and spirituality even if it differs from my own. I sat in the front of the lecture wanting to absorb her knowledge and wisdom like a sponge.
Dr. Donna radiated such a joyfulness, confidence, and light that I admired. I remember thinking to myself ‘I fear I am too broken to ever grow into that kind of woman and nurse, but I would like to’.
After the lecture, I was lucky enough to share a conversation with her. She took a sincere interest in who I was and my journey. When she found out I am spiritual but not a Christian, she didn’t bat an eye. She accepted me and wasn’t trying to change me. This meant a great deal.
At the end, she offered me a free copy of her book. I was grateful. I knew with finals upon me, it would have to wait—but I knew I wanted to read it. When I was able to devote time to picking this book up, I couldn’t put it down. As a 29 year old who is facing some uncertainty and internal struggles—Dr. Donna’s honesty and vulnerability made me feel seen and less alone. She writes with courage and truth about her life and what it is to be human. There were many moments while reading this that made me breathe a sigh of relief in self compassion and grace—“auh, I am not alone”.
